While we’re talking about things that are wrong, let’s think about things we kept doing wrong until being told otherwise. Metafilter has a huge list of these from readers.
I thought “meme” was pronounced “mehm” until a few years ago. This probably has something to do with learning French in the same time period as coming across the Internet term. Since the French word for same is “même” and is pronounced “mehm”, I thought the Internet term was pronounced the same way. I don’t remember how I discovered my wrongdoing, but it was a fairly recent discovery.
Over on Metafilter, I learned that the L in “almond” is optional and not the preferred pronunciation. “Banal” rhymes with “canal”, not “anal”. “Segue” is a milder Segway.
My mind is blown.
