Stephen Hawking and the universe

When I saw Stephen Hawking as a trending topic on Twitter this morning, I was worried that a brilliant scientific mind had died. A click on the topic told me otherwise. No, he’s still alive. Thank goodness.

He did, however, talk about his upcoming book The Grand Design. Hawking stated that a divine creator is not necessary in the making of this universe. Specifically:

“Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist.
“It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going.” (from The Grand Design)

And this is what has made Stephen Hawking a trending topic for at least twelve hours. Hawking has it right. Why can’t people open their minds to this possibility?
