Earthquake!

Today’s big news is the earthquake that shook a huge part of the east coast in the U.S. I didn’t feel it myself here in Georgia, but friends of friends (and friends of friends of friends) felt it in other parts of the state. The Did You Feel It map provided by the U.S. Geological Society shows me that people near me did feel the earthquake, though very lightly. Maybe I should.

The news struck on Twitter, as instant news breaks best. I found out about the earthquake from all the people in my feed tweeting about the earth suddenly shaking several minutes before news outlets picked up the story. Who needs the news when you have Twitter?

So what made some people feel the quake while others nearby didn’t? Chances are some folks are more sensitive to feeling these things than others. No one in meatspace mentioned the earthquake, whether through seeing it on the news or feeling it themselves. I’m thinking none of them felt it. To the best of my knowledge I’ve been through only one earthquake in my life, and it was late at night and so light that I slept through the thing. To this day I still have no idea what an earthquake feels like. Man, why didn’t I get invited to this earthquake party? I feel left out now.

One reply on “Earthquake!”

I’m in MA and when I felt it I was in a room with two other people who were talking extensively about financial things. I (being a bit bored) felt it. The person listening felt it as well. The person talking, who was three feet away from us, didn’t feel it at all and was very shocked when his receptionist came in and asked if we’d felt the earthquake…

But being from CA I don’t really know what all the fuss is about.
